ANNOUNCING
MYSTERY BLOCK OF THE  MONTH 2021
WAITING FOR THE VACCINE

organized by Christine Dunn

Our Block of The Month Mystery Journey—Waiting for the Vaccine-- begins now!  Since it’s heavily invested in the Internet which changes its offerings frequently it will have to remain a mystery. Hopefully, as I double check things throughout the year; nothing will have to be changed.  Representatives from our Circles were a great help in gathering blocks for this program.  Thanks to all!!  (see the Jan. Feb Chatter for a list of contributors).

The blocks will be announced (two months at a time)  in each issue of Chatter starting with the Jan-Feb 2021 issue.  They will also be posted here for your reference.  The full list of all blocks will remain here so you can start at any time & do as many blocks as you wish!

 GENERAL INFORMATION

Each block should finish at 12" (12 1/2" unfinished), i.e., the standard size for most BOM programs.

Note: most Block of the month programs refer to one quilting method in a 12” finished block size; we are doing three per month, with choices in most if not all of these methods. And design challenges once in a while too. Some month’s alternate sites are listed.  So while the 12” size might be found on The Quilters Cache, the Generations Quilt Pattern site might list it or a variation of it, in other sizes. Sorry miniature enthusiasts; nothing in this program is that small.

Note: We will provide you with the link to the blocks which you can then print. You can make whatever you like-mug rugs, table toppers or runners, sampler quilt or placemats. Taking you to a website for you to print out the pattern has to do with copyright nuances which are changing in the crafting/quilting world. We recommend reading the following:
https://www.generations-quilt-patterns.com/copyright.html
https://www.quilterscache.com/TermsPage.html

Of course, you are free to find and use your own pattern that fits the theme of the monthly block.

A
OPTIONS TO SHARE YOUR BLOCKS

1.  For publication in the Chatter

You can share your completed blocks with your Circles so that they can include pictures of them in their Circle updates published in the Chatter and/or on their separate Circle webpage.  Check with your Circle Chair to learn how she wishes to manage this.

2.  Posting on a special BOM DQN Facebook page

1. This group is only for DQN “BOM Waiting for the Vaccine” items.  Click here :Waiting for the Vaccine BOM Facebook Page .  Note: when you click JOIN to may see information about the CDC site; ignore this and continue to Join the group; you will get confirmation that it is the DQN site.
2. When posting blocks you must include the following:
           A, The block’s name
           B. Either the block’s website. the source of the pattern used,  or the author's name (if an original DQN member's block).
3. For simplicity and ease of viewing you have a 3-month window to post your completed  blocks,  i.e. January blocks must be posted by end of March, February blocks must be posted by end of April, March blocks by end of May, etc.
4. Please remember, ONLY photos of the BOM will be accepted here. We have a different group, DQN’s Show & Tell, for 12-4-12, other projects, questions, etc.

To join the Facebook group, you will need to "Like" the DQN page, then you can find it under the groups tab.
Contact Nannett Jordan for additional questions about adding pictures to the Facebook page.

BLOCK TERMINOLOGY

You will see various initials and terms in these months.  So let’s do a key unlocker, when you see:

PW:  It means that these blocks are patchwork blocks,
PP: These blocks are Paper Pieced, many of you who like paper piecing may be interested in reading Carol Doaks’ Article: “Piecing on Paper or How to Turn Patchwork into a Pieced Pattern”.
APP: These blocks are appliqued, woolies should be able to do some of these choices, if not all of them.
EMB:  Refers to Embroidery Machines, Feel free to design your own!  We’ll try to sum up the month in a word or two for you.  Linda Soeder, was able to find a few websites to add in your design process.  They’ll be included each month.
“Float” You will need to add strips (usually background fabric) to make this block into the traditional 12” Finished size used thru out most of the Block of the Month world.
